Encounter God - Be Renewed
Contemplating Christ, The Gospels and the Interior Life was published in 2018 by Father Vincent Pizzuto. Chapters with titles such as “Words Made Flesh: Scripture and the Interior Life” and “Becoming Prayer: Discipleship and the Interior Life” hint at Fr. Pizzuto’s desire to combine academic Biblical scholarship with the contemplative life. If that seems like an oxymoron, then the author might have something to share with you and we will read this book in community, which will allow for discussion and reflection.
The author writes, “The purpose of this book, then, is threefold. First, to explore central themes of the contemplative life for modern Christians through the lens of New Testament readings- most especially the gospels. Second, to reflect on what is unique to Christian mysticism, particularly as this comes to expression in the interrelated doctrines of incarnation and divinization. Third, to offer a variety of ways in which these aspects of the contemplative life might become … “embodied” in each of us through contemplative practice.”
The Rev. Vincent Pizzuto, PhD, is a professor of New Testament and Christian mysticism at the Jesuit University of San Francisco. As an Episcopal priest, Fr. Pizzuto serves as vicar of St. Columba’s Episcopal Church and Retreat House in the beautiful environs of Inverness, California. Having founded the contemplative Christian community New Skellig in 2006, both communities now coexist under his leadership for the advancement of contemplative Christianity. He lives in Marin County with his partner, Fernando, and their pup, Forrest-who loves to fetch sticks.
